چکیده

IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol employs two techniques for packet transmission; the basic access scheme and the RTS/CTS reservation scheme. In this paper, we carry out an analysis in order to derive an all-purpose expression for the threshold value, which determines when the RTS/CTS scheme should be employed, under ideal channel conditions without the presence of hidden stations or transmission errors. The main advantage of our proposed approach is that it is simple and gives insights of the RTS/CTS mechanism. Results based on the presented analysis for the IEEE 802.11b transmission rates and delays study the effect of the different protocol parameters on the RTS/CTS threshold. Moreover, results indicate that proper selection of protocol parameters such as retry limit and physical packet overhead for the specific data rate is of great importance in minimizing packet delay and improving overall performance.

A Hidden Node Aware Network Allocation Vector Management System for Multi-hop Wireless Ad hoc Networks

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...

Effectiveness of RTS=CTS handshake in IEEE 802.11a Wireless LANs

The RTS=CTS reservation scheme in IEEE 802.11a Wireless LANs (WLANs) is employed to improve performance as it shortens packet collision duration and addresses the hidden station problem. An investigation has been conducted into how effective the RTS=CTS handshake is in reducing collision duration for 54 Mbit=s by extending an existing mathematical model for the particular packet overheads and d...

Analyzing the RTS/CTS Mechanism in the DFWMAC Media Access Protocol for Wireless LANs

The distributed coordination function that is used as the access scheme for asynchronous traffic within the upcoming standard for wireless LANs IEEE 802.11 optionally applies the RTS/CTS message exchange to solve the ‘hidden terminal’ scenario. In this paper, following a general discussion of the mechanism and its problems, we show the effectiveness or lack thereof of this mechanism in various ...

The IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function in Small-Scale Ad-Hoc Wireless LANs

The IEEE 802.11 standards for wireless local area networks define how the stations of an ad-hoc wireless network coordinate in order to share the medium efficiently. This work investigates the performance of such a network by considering the two different access mechanisms proposed in these standards. The IEEE 802.11 access mechanisms are based on the carrier sense multiple access with collisio...
